When crafting a goal, it is important to be specific about what you want to achieve. Identifying the details helps momentum, motivation and focus.
But remember, anything that involves the decision-making processes of another person is not within your control and therefore cannot be a goal.
These are goals outside of your control:
- Landing ABC company as a client
- Making $200,000 this year
- Completing a team project on time
- Getting buy-in from managers or staff
All of these are valuable and worthwhile desired outcomes, but not goals. The goals are the attitudes and actions you must take to make those desired outcomes more likely to happen.
Action – Is one of your stuck goals relying on the decisions or actions of someone else? If so, it’s not a goal. Rework it until it is within your control.
Only then is it truly a goal YOU can achieve.
