I know a quote that is a valuable principle, but also makes me laugh. This quote often comes to mind when clients complain about colleagues they’ve squabbled with.
Never argue with an idiot. He’ll drag you down to his level then beat you with experience!
Now, I certainly don’t think anyone is really an ‘idiot’, but this reminds us that you will not agree with everyone and vice versa, but arguing gets you nowhere.
Sure, disagree, debate, have a discussion. But most disputes stem from poor communication skills, stress and a need to vent rather than a real desire to address an idea.
Action – Review a recent quarrel. What did you do that contributed to it getting out of hand? At what stage could you have walked away?
Arguing toe-to-toe serves no-one, except perhaps the so-called idiot who wants to bring you down to his or her level.
